  17. Windows NT provides to ways for applications to run on any particular CPU:
  18.  
  19. * Intel emulation for x86 binaries.
  20. * Native code.
  21.  
  22. Any Intel win32 binary will run on any NT supported platform (provided 
  23. the emulation subsystem is installed) on any RISC processor.  You take 
  24. some speed penalties because of the emulation.  Mostly, this is a good 
  25. way for you to be able to run random Windows productivity applications 
  26. and utilities that don't have native support for your RISC processor.  
  27. My impression is that some of the faster RISC systems emulate a 486 
  28. with decently snappy performance, so this isn't too bad an option for a 
  29. lot of things, especially if you have, for instance, a dual MIPS 
  30. Deskstation machine.

  32. To get full performance, you need to run an app that is compiled to the 
  33. native code of the processor on which you are running NT.  This means 
  34. that the application vendor needs to supply you with the appropriate 
  35. executable binaries for your CPU.
  36.  
  37. You can probably expect to start seeing apps that ship on CDROM with 
  38. several binaries and a smart install that will select the appropriate 
  39. one for your machine.  Either that, or you'll find yourself specifying 
  40. in your order which CPU you are using.
  41.  
  42. Supplying binaries for alternate processors is (in theory) a relatively 
  43. minor incremental task for the developer, so you'll see more and more 
  44. of them doing it, especially people who make high end graphics tools 
  45. and the like.  The big problem is distribution and all those potential 
  46. SKUs and the ensuing confusion.  CDROM and smart install programs will 
  47. probably go a long way towards solving that.  If your particular vendor 
  48. is late delivering native support for your CPU, you should probably 
  49. blame their compiler vendor before you blame them.

  62.   Okay another question..I just called DEC and got a whole listing on
  63. Windows NT software that will work on their machine..Sure, enough Real 3d
  64. is on the list..Now here is the qestion. If software says it runs on
  65. windows NT machines...are there specific versions for each type of
  66. windows Nt platform? or just one version? Will Real 3d for windows Nt
  67. running on a DEC Aplha take as much advantage of teh cpu power as real 3d
  68. running on windows NT raptor system??? I know thes eare not really
  69. lightwave related..but soon...we may decide to look in to these new
  70. systems for lightwave...since it may come for Windows NT...Also, will SGI
  71. box's run NT??
